The Howard Lady Bison snapped Florida A&M’s (FAMU) 14-game winning streak with a 68-61 victory Feb. 11 at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C. Florida A&M has not beaten Howard at home since 2007.
Howard (18-7 overall, 10-2 MEAC) finished with four players in double figures. Junior guard Tamoria Holmes had an explosive game with a team-best 21 points on 8-for-19 shooting, and collected three steals. Junior forward Saadia Doyle finished with 13 points and six boards, while junior forward Kara Smith added 13 points of her own along with five rebounds. Senior guard Zykia Brown had a solid night with 12 points, six assists, and four rebounds in 35 minutes of action.
Both teams went toe-to-toe throughout the first half until the last minute of the period. With just two seconds on the clock, Holmes hit a bucket in transition to tie the score at 35-35 heading into the locker room.
The score remained close in the second half as both teams picked up their energy and fought to claim a decisive lead. In the last five minutes of the game, Howard had a 55-53 lead over FAMU.
Howard held on from that point as Smith, Holmes and Brown each held their ground to help Howard pull away. With the win, Howard snapped Florida A&M’s (17-6 overall, 10-1 MEAC) win streak and ended their undefeated conference record.
FAMU junior guard/forward Antona Bennett tallied a double-double, finishing with a game-high 25 points on 10-for-15 shooting and added 11 rebounds. Junior guard Tameka McKelton added 12 points and five rebounds, while junior center/forward Quiana Donald pitched in with 11 points and six boards.
Howard will host Bethune-Cookman Feb 13. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 pm at Burr Gymnasium.
