Jesse Jackson, former DC Shadow Senator, spoke on the DC Statehood issue. “We need a full scale national movement to get the residents of DC their statehood. We brought in Alaska and Hawaii in the same manner. We must do it for DC. The Democrats pay lip service to DC Statehood while the Republicans just flat out deny it. We must start a movement that demands representatives from other states support DC Statehood or not be elected or reelected.”
Dick Gregory said that although the monument is a great accomplishment, Dr. King probably would have been against it. “Dr. King was a humble man. This statue on the monument is not so much for Dr. King but a reminder of what we need to do to accomplish the things we struggle with in our lives.”
