The University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds snapped a three-game losing skid and advanced to an impressive 8-6 overall record on the season after a blowout victory over the Fayetteville State University Lady Broncos. UDC cruised by Fayetteville State, 77-54, in a home game at the UDC Sports Complex on Jan. 3.
Junior guard Jamilia Bonner scored a game-high 20 points for UDC, who held the lead the entire game. The Lady Firebirds started hot with a 17-9 run and never looked back, converting 29 Bronco turnovers into 33 points. They also outscored the Lady Broncos’ bench, 34-27, finished with a 12-4 advantage in fast break points.
UDC shot 38 percent from the field, 50 percent from three-point land and 69 percent from the free-throw line. The Lady Broncos shot 34 percent from the field, only 9 percent from beyond the three-point line and 77 percent from the charity stripe.
Junior guard Kendra Johnson also scored double-figures for UDC with 15 points along with two rebounds, two assists and 3 steals. Lady Firebirds junior guard Jasmine Rich added eight points, five rebounds and a game-high 11 assists.
Tiffany Haywood led the Bronco in scoring with 18 points, followed by JeLena Robertson with nine points despite the loss.
UDC will see its next action when they host their New Year’s Classic Jan. 8 and 9 at the Sports Complex. They will face King College on Jan. 8 and Central State University on Jan. 9.
