Tradition is the reason Lavonne Merriweather and a group of her girlfriends wound up in Washington, D.C. Her desire to pay homage to a great leader is the why she ended up visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. “If you fight hard enough and long enough this is what happens,” Merriweather said.

The memorial inspired Merriweather, but it also reminded her that injustice is still present throughout the world. A retired lawyer from Akron, Ohio, Merriweather said she knows from experience that injustices aren’t just fought by Black people but all races and nationalities. “There are old people, young people, black people and others all gathered here today to pay tribute to a man,” she said “Greatness knows no color.”
