The annual event that brings Leah’s Book Club together for “High Tea” was held at the Forest Park Golf Club Room where enthusiastic members and guests met to converse, compare, discuss and aesthetically immerse themselves in artistic works.

Delicious cuisine and fashion galore was observable, including exquisite hats and gloves that added to the ambiance of the occasion.

The Memorial High Tea honors the late Irene Bennett Reid, mother of former Baltimore mayor, the Honorable Kurt L. Schmoke, and daughter Karla Reid Young.

Dr. Leah Goldsborough Hasty spoke with feeling of her friend, Mrs. Reid, who had been an avid reader and literary genius who created a passion for reading in her children.

The audience viewed a Power Point presentation displaying members of the community who were honored: Mary Catherine Rawlings, Florine “Peaches” Camphor, Joe Ann Oatis, Ella Holland, Delphine Lee, Betty Shelton, Essie Sutton, Joanne Wallace, Rhonda B. Jones, Connie Waddell, Deborah Lynn Brown (posthumously), and Loraine Brown.

A book discussion by Dr. George Derek Musgrove, author of “Rumor, Repression, and Racial Politics: How Harassment of Black Elected Officials Shaped Post-Civil Rights America” provided a lively audience-author interaction.
