Cardin to Discuss New Opportunities for 3-D Manufacturing, Confronting Prescription Opioid and Heroin Addiction Epidemic

Friday, September 23, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), will be in Cecil and Harford counties to discuss ways to confront Maryland’s surging statewide prescription opioid and heroin addiction epidemic and also to promote Maryland’s high-tech, Additive Manufacturing businesses, which build 3-D objects by adding layer upon layer of material.
Friday, September 23 at 9:30 AM, Senator Cardin will be joined in Perryville, Md., by local substance use disorder and behavioral health specialists, medical providers and law enforcement officials for a discussion on the growing statewide prescription opioid and heroin epidemic. Senator Cardin and participants will discuss how substance use disorders begin and what communities and government can do to prevent prescription opioid use and expand access to treatment.
“The prescription opioid and heroin epidemic is a public health crisis that hurts every state in our country, and every region of Maryland. Some rural parts of our state have the highest per capita rates of heroin and opioid drug use in the United States,” said Senator Cardin. “Facing this challenge goes beyond law enforcement and must include treatment centers, prevention, addressing overdoses and providing support for those in or seeking recovery. A comprehensive approach requires the federal government work as an active partner with our states and localities, providing adequate resources to address the existing and emerging trends in prescription opioid abuse and heroin use.”
