Mayor Vincent C. Gray joined government officials and a development team Feb. 22 to break ground for The Nannie Helen at 4800, a mixed-use project which will provide affordable housing, retail and other amenities in Deanwood in northeast Washington, D.C.
“Breaking ground on The Nannie Helen at 4800 is a pivotal milestone in the continued development of East-of-the-River communities in the District,” Gray said at the event. “We thank everyone who came together to bring this project to fruition. This kind of development signals our commitment to increase the availability of affordable housing stock across the District, and is critical to the success of many of our Ward 7 residents.”
Developers A. Wash & Associates were joined by Gray, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown, Ward 7 Council member Yvette Alexander (D), D.C. Housing Finance Agency Director Harry Sewell, and D.C. Housing Authority Director Adrianne Todman at the groundbreaking for the 89,000-square-foot site.
In addition to housing and retail, the project includes an adult education and fitness center, more than 3,400 square feet of office space and replacement units for displaced residents of the Lincoln Heights housing development.
The Nannie Helen is part of more than $2.3 billion of District-affiliated projects currently under construction across the city, creating thousands of construction jobs and permanent jobs.
