For the past few years, students involved in the Montgomery County Students Construction Trades Foundation’s (CTF) programs have worked through the construction process to design and build the 39th Young American House (YA 39). Situated at 3718 Munsey Street, Silver Spring, Md., the unveiling will occur, 5 -7 p.m., Oct. 29, at the highly anticipated Cornerstone Ceremony. The Cornerstone Ceremony will recognize students’ achievements in the Construction Technology program, provide students the opportunity to showcase their work to others in the educational, construction, and neighborhood communities, and allow stakeholders to celebrate with one another the achievements of the partnership between The Construction Trades Office, Montgomery County Public Schools, and local Construction Community. The Cornerstone Ceremony will consist of student and program recognition, placing of the cornerstone, house tours, and light refreshments.
Within the Construction Technology cluster, seven construction specialty courses are offered, including architecture. The architecture students, along with the support of local architectural firms, design and edit the blue prints for the house. Then, masonry, carpentry, construction electricity, plumbing, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) students, under the supervision of teachers and business professionals, work in the field to learn how to follow blue prints, learn and practice skills, and collaborate in an authentic setting. Ricky Clark, a senior carpentry student said, “I think it’s a great program. It helps students get a head start and teaches us some life skills.”
Their most recent housing development has been on the corner of Dean Road and Connecticut Avenue in Silver Spring. This development has been a twelve house project and YA 39 is part of this community. YA 39 is approximately 2,500 square feet with 3 bedrooms, 3 ½ bathrooms, a finished basement, and a one car garage with a work area. The house will be listed on the market after the Cornerstone Ceremony.
