The Morgan State men’s and women’s tennis teams both earned victories over Baltimore City rival Coppin State on March 20.
MSU’s men’s squad completely swept Coppin State, 7-0, in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest held at the Coppin State Tennis Courts. MSU freshman Duk Young-Park won the No. 1 singles event with a score of 6-0, 7-5.
Young-Park’s teammate Aaron Benjamin earned his victory over CSU’s Tre’vonne Peyton in the No. 6 singles, but it came much tougher than Young-Park’s win.
Benjamin lost the first round, 6-7, but bounced back to win the next two rounds, 7-6, 10-7. MSU’s Jannick Tash finished off the singles event for the men’s team, beating CSU’s Reginald Robinson, 6-3, 6-3.
The Bears also swept the doubles event as Eric Ward and Duwane Thomas took out Coppin State’s Robinson and Daniel Nino, 8-1.
Morgan State’s men’s victory improved their record in the MEAC to 2-0, 3-5 overall. They will play another conference rival, Howard University, on Saturday, March 24 in Washington, D.C.
Meanwhile, the women’s team earned a 5-2 victory over Coppin State on March 20, improving their record to 3-6 overall, 2-1 vs. the MEAC.
MSU’s Margarita Belyakova led the way with victories in the singles and doubles event.
Belyakova beat CSU’s Katherine Chisholm 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles event before teaming up with Arina Alilueva to take out Chisholm and Lauretta Mukam, 8-0 in the doubles event.
Alilueva also earned a singles event win by beating Lauretta Mukam 6-1, 6-0.
Fellow teammate Jasmine Edwards also posted a win by going 6-0, 6-0 against Coppin State’s Sharise Coppin, while Tiffany Hughes sealed the team victory for Morgan by shutting out Janka Schmitt 6-0, 6-0.
