If Prince George’s County government officials and business leaders have their way, the county’s 15-19 year-olds will not only have jobs this summer, but will be prepared to be the kind of workers employers will welcome.
Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III is teaming up with Prince George’s Community College (PGCC), the Greater Prince George’s County Business Roundtable, the Prince George’s Chamber of Commerce, Prince George’s County Public School System (PGCPS) and the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) to provide not only jobs but training and preparation for county youth.
“We are committed to ensuring that our youth are engaged in meaningful and enriching activities during the summer months,” Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III said in a news release.
To get young potential workers ready, the county is encouraging 15-19 year-olds to enroll in Youth Work/ Summer Youth Enrichment Program (SYEP)’s job readiness training. The program consists of four 4-hour sessions, held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Parkdale, Central and Crossland high schools.
According to a county news release, participants will also be asked to participate in online follow-up sessions to practice skills learned in class and will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the program. Registration will be open until April 4.
“The opportunities being provided in this enhanced summer jobs program also will educate and inspire them to think about their future careers, introduce them to potential mentors, and will create memories and provide lessons that will last a lifetime,” Baker said.
The Greater Prince George’s County Business Roundtable, Prince George’s Chamber of Commerce, Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and Prince George’s County Government will all have summer employment opportunities applicable. However, the application acceptance periods for different companies will vary.
For county government jobs, Prince George’s County Government’s application acceptance period began on Feb. 24 and will end on March 21. Although the acceptance ends on March 21, the website will remain open to receive applications for the other entities, which have varying application periods.
