Producer, entertainer Tyler Perry has overcome hardships of childhood abuse and homelessness making a name for himself in the entertainment business from his on-stage productions to the big screen. Now Perry is coming to the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) alongside his friend, media mogul Oprah Winfrey.
In anticipation of the season openers of his first two scripted series for the network, โThe Haves and the Have Notsโ and โLove Thy Neighbor,โ premiering on May 28 and 29, Perry is sitting down with Winfrey in an interview on May 26 at 9 p.m. for โOprahโs Next Chapter.โ
The pair is slated to discuss his take on people who criticize his plays and films, his life-changing moments and when he first realized he had reached success.
While Perry has experienced much success in Hollywood, fame is not without criticism. Legendary producer Spike Lee and culture critic Toure have been some of Perryโs most vocal critics over the years calling Perryโs films and characters stereotypical.
โWhy would I be upset with people who donโt get it,โ said Perry, in a clip from the interview. โAnd when I tell you I have these messages by the millions of people of how my movies and work has spoken to them and their family, so the ones who donโt get it arenโt as important.โ
Perry said he always looks for truth in the criticism. He said if there is truth, he is ok with the criticism and can respect it.
โBut if someone is genuine enough to give me a real and truth critique to help me grow, I am open to that,โ he said in a clip from the interview.
Perry also discussed the lack of roles for Black women in Hollywood. He said Hollywood needs to work on actively creating roles. He said there needs to be more diversity in the stories being told. He said we need more diversity in the producers and writers because people tell stories based on their own life experiences.
Perryโs new show โThe Haves and the Have Notsโ is a television drama portraying the dynamics between a rich family, the Cryerโs, and the people hired to work in the mansion in Georgia. Perryโs other show, โLove Thy Neighbor,โ is a comedy about a middle-class family and their downfalls, joys and triumphs.
