Pop Smoke, 20, was shot and killed early on Feb. 19, outside of a Hollywood Hills home in Los Angeles. The popular celebrity gossip website, TMZ, is under fire again for releasing the tragic news before alerting the rapper’s family members. Color Of Change (COC)is the nation’s largest online racial justice organization, and they released a petition to combat this injustice. According to COC, TMZ’s negligence in reporting Black tragedy has demonstrated how little consideration they have for the effect its news has on grieving families or the Black community. By treating Black life with such cruel disregard, TMZ is communicating to its Black readers and viewers that our culture is only a means of profit. (Photo courtesy of Instagram @RealPopSmoke)
