The lone survivor of the 2007 brutal attack that claimed the lives of three Newark, N.J., natives recently graduated from college, Blackvoices.com reported.

Natasha Aeriel received her degree from Delaware State University on May 23, one day prior to the conviction of Rodolfo Godinez, the first of six defendants to be charged in the case.

Three years ago, Aeriel, her brother Terrance and her best friends Dashon Harvey and Iofemi Hightower were at a schoolyard when attackers killed Harvey, Hightower and Terrance Aeriel.

According to Aerial, the attackers attempted to cut her neck with a machete before shooting her in the face. After hearing gun shots, she saw her brother and friends disappear.

Following the violent event, Newark officials began pushing an anti-crime initiative that has since lowered the city’s murder and overall crime rates.
