The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Volleyball Team recently ended their regular season in winning fashion with a 3-0 shutout victory over the Virginia State University Trojans.
Senior middle hitter Karen Trevino led the Firebirds with 12 kills, two service aces, 12 digs and a .880 career hitting average, helping UDC advance to a 20-8 record on the season. The Firebirds will now play the waiting game to see if they qualify to play in the NCAA Championship quarterfinals scheduled to begin Dec. 2 in Kentucky.
But whether UDC advances to postseason play or not, Firebirds head coach Sheila Weaver believes this season was a success.
“It was great to finish the season with a win to improve our record to 20-8,” Weaver told the AFRO. “The girls have played exceptionally hard all year beating all Division II teams in the immediate metropolitan area.”
Coach Weaver’s aim is to lead her team to success, not just to win, but also to attract more recruits to UDC’s program.
“On this year’s team, we have players from Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Tennessee and Brazil,” Weaver said. “However, one of my goals is to bring more attention to the sport locally so that girls in the area can receive the training necessary to take advantage of athletic scholarship opportunities at The University of the District of Columbia and other colleges and universities.”
