No. 2 West Virginia sidestepped a possible upset by pounding the No. 11 seed Washington Huskies, 69-56, in the East Regional semifinals at Syracuse, N.Y. on Thursday, March 25.
Mountaineers star Da’Sean Butler scored a key 14 points, along with seven rebounds despite injuring his hand.
“Once I stood up, the one thing that was pretty numb was my hand, and I said, ‘All right, I’ll be fine,’” Butler said.
He was right, finishing as one of three WVU players who scored in double digits.
Kevin Jones led the Mountaineers (30-6) with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Devin Ebanks added 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Justin Holliday led Washington (26-10) with 14 points, eight rebounds, five steals and two blocks.
West Virgina will now take on fan-favorite Kentucky in an Elite 8 matchup on Saturday.
