WHUR-FM is winding up its year-long 40th anniversary celebration with a holiday concert and party Saturday, Dec. 10 from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center in the Cherry Blossom Room overlooking the Potomac River.
The concert is an invitation-only event to reunite former and current employees who have contributed to the stationโs success.
โSo many people have been instrumental in the accomplishments of WHUR. The 40th anniversary celebration is just our way of saying thank you to those persons who have given of their time and talents over the years,โ WHUR Radio Network General Manager Jim Watkins said in a statement.
WHUR 96.3 FM debuted in the Washington, D.C. market on Dec. 10, 1971 at 6 p.m., with a mix of music โ primarily jazz โ news, information, and community service.
WHUR this year expanded to satellite radio, launching H.U.R. Voices Dec. 1 on SiriusXM channel 141.
H.U.R. Voices offer a mix of educational and entertaining original programming that examines and explores issues that affect people of color, including a unique mixture of talk radio, local and national news, and music, according to a statement released last month,.
The channel will feature WHUR and WHUR-WORLD signature programs like the โDaily Drum,โ a weekday public affairs program that was one of the original shows on WHUR when it was first launched. The Drum, as itโs popularly known, is being expanded to one-hour. Other shows include: the โDr. Audrey Chapman Show,โ featuring the relationship guru; and the โSilent Storm,โ the only radio show devoted to the issue of domestic violence; โPeople Money Life,โ โThe Traveling Eyeโ and โHe Said She Said.โ
โWe are proud of our past accomplishments and excited about the opportunity to build on our 40-year legacy,โ Watkins said in the statement.
SiriusXM granted Howard University a lease to create one of two channels on the satellite radio system. The other channel, HBCU, is set to launch May 2012 and will provide music and talk programming from Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
