The 2-year-old son of former NFL quarterback Randall Cunningham’s died June 29 after drowning in the backyard of his Las Vegas, Nevada home.
Christian Cunningham, the youngest of Randall Cunningham’s four children, was found floating in a hot tub late Tuesday afternoon. Cunningham, 47, routinely performs baptisms in the hot tub as part of his duties as an ordained minister and pastor of a church located near his home.
Christian was found Tuesday afternoon by a woman who was watching several children when she discovered the boy around 4:30 p.m. Police believe the boy drowned after wandering into the backyard but are still investigating the matter.
“We received a call last night and the call was to an actual child that was found floating in a pool,” Officer Barbara Morgan of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department told the AFRO. “When we arrived, there was an adult that was giving CPR to the child and he was transferred to a local hospital where he later expired. At this point we not believe this is neglect, it’s an accident.”
Cunningham played 16 seasons in the NFL, most notably as the revolutionary quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. His speed and scrambling ability earned him four Pro Bowl selections and NFC Player of the Year in 1990.
Cunningham was believed to be in San Diego at the time of the drowning but was expected to be en route to the Las Vegas area.
