(June 9, 2012) South Carolina State University sophomore runner Seymour Walter boosted his chances of qualifying for the 2012 Summer Olympics after he broke a U.S. Virgin Island National record June 2 at the Music City Distance Carnival held at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.

The St. Croix, Virgin Island native ran a blazing time of 1:49.19 in the 800 meter event, snapping the record held by former S.C. State runner Terry Charles, also a native of the Virgin Islands. Charles had set his record back in 2008 with a time of 1:49.50.

Walter hopes to run in the world Olympics, but will have to continue his success in another event heโ€™s scheduled to run early this summer. He will race in the 2012 North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association Under-23 Championships, held in Mexico in July.

Another first place finish should qualify him to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England.
